The real meaning of Christmas

I, like most people get caught up with the buying and receiving of presents as it gets closer to Christmas. Lots of lists are made and money is spent and whilst I enjoy this element I also realise that this isn't what Christmas is really about.

For those poor people in Cumbria who aren't going to be in their own homes this Christmas, I am sure that presents are the least of their worries. The greatest gift they are going to have is their friends and family offering to let them stay at their houses and for them to extend their kindness towards them.

I think this is what Christmas is about - having a thought for those worse off than yourself. Would it really hurt to send a few extra Christmas cards this year or remembering someone who you haven't spoken to recently, perhaps popping round to a neighbour who is spending Christmas alone? I think these very small acts of kindness might make someone elses Christmas that little bit better and are filled with Christmas spirit.
